We recently had the pleasure of working on a kitchen renovation in a historic Victorian home in Newton, MA.
A home rich in architectural details and history, from intricate moldings and high ceilings to beautiful woodwork. Our goal was to honor these timeless features while updating the space with modern touches.
We were brought into the project after the client had already drafted floor plans for the renovation, and we were tasked with assisting with the design elements. However, upon closer inspection, we discovered that the original plans couldn't be executed as intended due to unexpected framing issues inside the walls.
We decided to reimagine the entire layout, ensuring it better suited the space and worked closely with the contractor team to make sure our ideas were both creative and feasible. The result was a stunning and layered kitchen that blended historical charm with modern comforts.
Light & Space
Their kitchen had great potential but it was missing the kind of natural light that makes a space feel airy and open. To change that, we opened up the wall behind the sink and added a wide bay of windows, carefully positioned to bring in as much light as possible. With the existing skylight and the new retractable deck door we included, the transformation filled the space with light, creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere.
All in the Details
One of the most exciting parts of this project was the custom range hood, designed specifically to complement the unique LaCanche range the homeowners had chosen. We worked closely with the contractor team to bring this design to life, making sure every detail was perfectly aligned with the homeowners' vision.
For the countertops, we selected elegant slabs of marble and soapstone, carefully curated to complement the beauty of the wood island and the plastered hood. These elements came together to create a stunning blend of beauty and sophistication.
Thoughtful Touches
As with many design projects, the finishing touches make this kitchen special. We chose multiple lighting sources to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that enhances the space. Antique brass light switch plates and cabinet hardware brought a touch of character, making every inch feel thoughtfully designed.
A local woodworker crafted the custom island, adding a timeless feel to the space and perfectly complementing the clean lines and modern touches throughout.
Stylish Storage Solutions
We designed a custom coffee station with a bi-fold door and interior lighting, perfectly sized to fit the family's coffeemaker. Just a few steps away, we made use of a previously unused nook by adding a tall wine cabinet, painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore to tie in with the rest of the design. The small pantry was also painted in Iron Ore, featuring shiplap walls and custom cabinetry that maximized both storage and style.
Every choice for this kitchen was made with an intention of honoring the home's heritage while creating a warm and functional space that the family can enjoy for years to come. We're thrilled with how it turned out!
